At the time of Independence, most of the region south of the princely state of Hyderabad was given the name Madras State, which was subsequently further reorganised on linguistic grounds. Tamil Nadu, or the land of the Tamils, came into being in 1969, bound by the Western Ghats to the west, the Eastern Ghats to the north while it shared its borders with Kerala, Karnataka and Andhara Pradesh.
